Lutherstadt Wittenberg - There's never been a better time to visit!
Anyone gazing upon the town's silhouette from the direction of the Elbe river today will still be able to admire the towers of the Castle and the Town Church. Both buildings have shaped the townscape since Luther's time. And yet the town has never been so beautiful! Extensive urban development projects - also on the occasion of the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 - have made this possible.
Wittenberg attained a level of global historical significance that is still having an impact today. Congress and conference rooms have sprung up within its historic walls. Event and exhibition facilities create space for culture, and new training institutes satisfy the rising demand for further education and training.
Lutherstadt Wittenberg has retained the character of a city of culture, with its historical roots way back in the Reformation period of the 16th century. Surrounded by a unique natural and cultural landscape, it is a highly distinctive place to live.
Thanks to a stable economy, a growing number of people are finding training, employment and future prospects in the town and its surrounding area. Once known as the "Rome of the North", today, Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a cultural and historical jewel with vast economic potential.
Why not take a guided tour of our beautiful town!
The town with everything in easy reach
Live, work and socialize right in the heart of history
Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a modern town offering a high quality of life. Fortunately it was practically untouched by the war and spared from the radical redevelopment of the Socialist era. Hence it has retained almost all its charm. It is a place where, even today, people live, work and socialize in seamless harmony.
Open streams flow through the town centre, shaded old townhouses provide the perfect retreat for conversation or reading on hot days, and you'll find not only tourists strolling through the streets, but also graduates and guests of the Evangelical Seminary, Wittenberg University, the Leucorea, the Wittenberg Centre for Global Ethics and other learning and training institutions - in brief: Lutherstadt Wittenberg has remained a town founded on educated middle class principles in the very best sense.
Rich culture in a beautiful landscape
Only a stone's throw away lie the meadowlands of the Elbe. A fascinating natural landscape, the "UNESCO Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve Site“, is a wonderful sight to behold with its ancient trees and branching river arms. Back in the city, visitors can experience a wide variety of events: Concerts, conferences, historic festivals, excellent shopping facilities and a restaurant scene to suit every palate.
There is almost no other place in Germany where culture and nature comes together so effortlessly to create a relaxing location with plenty to see and experience.
A flair for living
So it's no wonder that more and more people are deciding to move here to the shores of the Elbe. Everyday life is affordable, urban agglomerations such as Berlin or Leipzig are only half an hour away thanks to excellent transport links, and the town and its immediate surroundings offer ever more attractive work opportunities. Lutherstadt Wittenberg is continuing to grow as an industrial, administrative and service centre for the entire region.
Weekends are the perfect time for locals to enjoy the numerous leisure and recreational opportunities on offer, such as the Cranachhöfe, the Stadthaus and Exerzierhalle arts and conference venues - cultural centres with historical backgrounds, the swimming pools, the zoo, the Butterfly Park, canoeing on the Elbe, sports... the possibilities are endless...
The historic old town with its open streams, its colourful rows of houses and charming Renaissance façades invites you to enjoy a very special kind of shopping experience with its numerous shopping opportunities, the "Arsenal" shopping centre and a wide range of food outlets and restaurants. The historic courtyards of the old town offer plenty of opportunities if you're looking for art, handicrafts and authentic places. In the Tourist Information Centre at Schlossplatz and in the Stadthaus, you will find a wide selection of literature, regional souvenirs and shopping vouchers.
Living is stylish, affordable and convenient
The irresistible charm of living in a city on the river amazingly never seems to change: Living in the Renaissance age has now become renaissance living – with all the comforts of our modern age. The restored townhouses of the old town are testament to this.
After the reunification of Germany, Lutherstadt Wittenberg became a Mecca for architects. For them, it was a professional challenge to create modern living spaces amidst historical structures whilst respecting the required preservation orders and legislation on the protection of historical buildings and monuments. At one time, people lived in much smaller spaces, often without sanitary facilities, and were also much shorter in height, hence the average person nowadays would constantly bang their heads on the low doorways. The challenge was to successfully adapt the human dimensions of the Renaissance to our modern standard of living.
A highly diverse business location
Sometimes, given the history of the city, it is easy to forget that major industries are based here. And are very successful.
Since the beginning of the 20 century, Wittenberg has been an important site for the nitrogen industry in Germany. Today, the Agro-Chemie Park, an area centred around the SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, Germany's largest producer of ammonia and urea and a manufacturer of agrochemicals and industrial chemicals, is based just outside the city gates. Shimmering pipelines and vast green areas also shape the image of industrial culture in this area.
Wittenberg's industrial tradition also continues in other areas - for example, in the construction of commercial and special vehicles, the manufacture of rubber compounds, high-quality corrosion and wear protection systems, in the ceramics and packaging industry, in construction chemicals production and in the production of adhesive labels, the construction of filling machines, in the air conditioning and special gas industry, or the food and beverage industry: Rama, Lätta and Sanella cheeses have virtually become specialities of the Wittenberg region.
Nowadays, the industrial environment is – as economists would say – "highly diversified" and therefore has a viable foundation for the future.
Wittenberg's economy is growing due to the fact that companies and investors are able to find the optimum conditions here.
The Town Office for Economic Development and the Anhalt-Bitterfeld | Dessau | Wittenberg Economic Development Agency mbH are helping to make this happen. They convince new investors of the many advantages of the location, advise existing businesses, provide support in the acquisition of new employees to solve the national problem of a lack of skilled workers and coordinate approval procedures.
A central location in the middle of many centres
Lutherstadt Wittenberg lies right in the heart of Germany – and Europe - with perfect transport links to the urban conurbations of the region. These include the river Elbe fairway, the fast ICE train connections, Leipzig-Halle and Berlin airports and the A9 motorway – all making Lutherstadt Wittenberg a place which is of course close to nature, but never faraway.
The ICE Munich/Berlin rail link means the city is accessible in just 35 minutes by rail from Berlin and 30 minutes from Leipzig. It takes only one hour to drive from Leipzig/Halle airport.
In December 2016, the new railway station building was inaugurated, right on time for the anniversary of the Reformation. The "Green Railway Station" is a modular, future-proof concept for the construction of state-of-the-art, climate-neutral railway buildings, which has only been implemented twice in Germany. The city is increasingly becoming an important centre right in the middle of many others, such as the famous Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg world heritage region, or the industrial conurbation of the Middle German Chemical Triangle. Wittenberg offers all the advantages of a perfectly connected region.
Making the move to Lutherstadt Wittenberg – whether as a place to base your business, to live, or to take a holiday – is mainly a question of logic, and not logistics.
The unique natural landscape and the outstanding UNESCO world heritage make this decision an easy one.
And there are other influencing factors, such as production-based research, the network of immediately accessible local companies and a workforce with excellent training.
In short: Lutherstadt Wittenberg has everything you could wish from a city and more
