New Town Hall / Police (O13QR2)

This area used to be part of the northern fortifications. Although Cavalier Bastion located here was quickly demolished when defortification was ordered by the German Emperor in 1873, the area remained in possession of the military. Barracks for the cavalry and a drill hall built in 1880 were followed by artillery barracks in 1901. After the Second World War, the entire complex passed to the Red Army, which set up a Russian school in the Cavalier Barracks for children of soldiers stationed in East Germany. Only long after the withdrawal of the Soviet troops in 1990 did an opportunity arise to repurpose the fenced-off ensemble. In 2000, the Cavalier Barracks were converted into the New Town Hall while the restored drill hall was turned into a public venue.
By laying a new promenade path and also planting trees to create a second external site of Luthergarten, the gap in the Ramparts at this point has been closed and the area around the New Town Hall incorporated into the Ramparts.
